Vineyard Insurance — Granite Belt Insurance Brokers
Granite Belt Insurance Brokers has been arranging vineyard and winery insurance for wine grape producers and boutique wineries across the Granite Belt for over 25 years. The region produces Australia’s most southerly wines and operates at altitude — our team understands the frost and hail risk profile of the region, insurer requirements for viticulture, and the specific needs of small to medium winery operations. ✅ What vineyard insurance typically covers
- Grape crop cover — damage to the wine grape crop from insured perils such as hail, fire and windstorm (subject to declared crop values and policy terms)
- Vine replacement — cost of establishing new vines after an insured event destroys established plantings (where included)
- Winery equipment and plant — tanks, presses, pumps, barrels, bottling equipment and refrigeration
- Wine stock — wine in barrel, tank and bottle at the winery
- Cellar door and winery buildings — cellar door, processing building, barrel hall and storage
- Public liability — cellar door visitors, wine events, farm gate and winery tours
- Products liability — wine and food products sold from the cellar door or through wholesale
- Business interruption — loss of winery revenue following an insured event
⚠️ Vineyard-specific cover gaps we frequently see
- Wine stock in barrel or tank not specifically covered or undervalued
- Vine replacement absent — establishing vines to production takes years and is expensive
- Cellar door public liability not extended to events, large groups and catering
- Products liability for wine sold through third-party channels unclear
- Winery equipment underinsured — replacement costs have increased significantly
- Accommodation and agri-tourism components not covered under standard vineyard policy
How we structure vineyard cover
- 1) Crop and vintage value — declared grape value per tonne by variety and expected yield
- 2) Wine stock — litres in barrel, tank and bottle at current winemaker’s value
- 3) Winery equipment — replacement cost of all processing and storage equipment
- 4) Cellar door activities — visitor numbers, events, catering, accommodation
- 5) Geographic risk — frost zone, hail exposure and bushfire risk for the specific property
If you need to make a claim
- Notify us and the insurer as soon as possible after a hail, frost or fire event
- Document vine and crop damage with dated photographs before any remediation
- Preserve weather data and Bureau of Meteorology records for the event date
- Do not remove damaged vines or dispose of damaged wine stock without insurer direction
Who this cover suits
- Wine grape growers selling to wineries or making own wine under licence
- Boutique winery operations with cellar door and direct sales
- Mixed orchard and vineyard properties across the Granite Belt
Renewal checklist
- Review declared crop and wine stock values before each vintage season
- Update winery equipment values — processing and refrigeration equipment costs have risen
- Confirm vine replacement cover is included with realistic establishment cost per hectare
- Check cellar door liability extends to events, catering and large group visits

❓ Common questions about this cover
Here are some of the questions we are commonly asked when arranging vineyard insurance for clients across the Granite Belt, New England and Northern Rivers.
- How much does vineyard insurance cost? Premium depends on your specific situation — cover type, sum insured, activities, claims history and insurer selection all affect the price. We compare options and explain the differences.
- Do I need a broker or can I go direct? You can go direct to an insurer, but a broker compares multiple markets, structures cover to match your needs, and advocates for you at claim time. For complex or rural risks, broker access often finds options not available direct.
- What happens if I need to claim? Contact us immediately. We manage the notification process, help you document the loss, liaise with the insurer and their assessors, and advocate for a fair outcome.
- How do I know if I’m underinsured? Your sum insured should reflect the full cost of rebuilding or replacing at today’s prices. We can help you review your sums insured at renewal.

What vineyard insurance typically covers
- Winery infrastructure: cellar door, winery building, tanks, barrels, bottling equipment and production infrastructure — subject to policy terms and sums insured
- Farm machinery: tractors, spray equipment, harvesters and vineyard machinery — cover varies by machine type and age
- Farm liability: public liability for cellar door visitors, contractors and product liability for wine sold — cover scope depends on activities and distribution channels
- Stock in trade: bottled wine, wine in barrel and in-process stock — subject to policy conditions and storage requirements
- Business interruption: income protection following insured events including equipment failure during vintage — where applicable
- Crop insurance: hail, fire and other specified perils on wine grapes — specialist placement, availability and terms vary by vintage
Common gaps for Granite Belt vignerons
- Tank and equipment failure during vintage — the most catastrophic timing for a winery; specific machinery breakdown cover is available but not automatically included
- Product liability scope — wine sold through cellar door, online, export and wholesale each creates different product liability exposures
- Hail exposure on vines — the Granite Belt has significant hail frequency; whether vines themselves are insurable depends on crop insurance availability each season
- Cellar door liability — tastings, events, weddings and functions at the cellar door require specific liability consideration
- Frost risk — late frost during budburst is a major risk for Granite Belt vineyards; crop insurance for frost has limited availability
- Stock valuation — wine in barrel and in-bottle appreciates in value; standard policies may not reflect current stock value
